Butterfield Green Fair photos

If you're local, please come to the AGM at 8pm on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 in the back garden at the Shakespeare Pub, Shakspeare Walk. The meeting will take about an hour, and we'll be electing new officers and street reps, and showing photos of this year's Butterfield Green Fair.

Butterfield Green Fair 2008

It's back! This year's Butterfield Green Fair is on Sunday May 18th 2008, and it's going to be great!

The event kicks off at noon, and the main entrance is on Allen Road, N16. There will be music at the bandstand all afternoon.

Check out the Mad Hatters’ Competition and Parade at 3.45pm. To enter, just make a “mad hat” from recycled materials, and join the parade. Hats can be made at home or at the Bath House stall at the Fair. Judging is at 4pm sharp. Prizes for best Under 11’s hat, Best 11–16, and Best 16+

If you're proud of your pooch, why not enter him/her in the Comedy Dog Show at 2pm? Your dog can enter any or all of the following classes:

Waggiest Tail – the friendliest dog wins
Best Dog statue – how long can your dog sit still?
Bling your dog – how glam 'n' glitzy can a dog be?
Pooch Idol – Stokey's most talented dog
Best in show – a chance to win the coveted ‘Bone d’Or 2008’

Rules: Please keep your dog on a lead and make sure that s/he is well behaved at all times. Points will be deducted for owners who don’t clear up their dog’s poop.

A Shakespeare neighbourhood car share scheme!

A local initiative in our area that might be of interest to some people is a car share/car club scheme. It's based in Nevill Road, Stoke Newington, London N16.

A small group of local residents share a 5-door Honda car. By paying a monthly contribution of £44, they can book the car online and then only pay for the petrol they use. The £44 a month covers repairs, insurance, road tax and even parking (in Hackney's 'E zone').

This great little website enables you to let Hackney Council know about any local problem from fly-tipping to broken paving stones in seconds! Go to FixMyStreet.co.uk, put in a nearby postcode, click on the map to show where the problem is, then describe it. If you want to, you can upload a photo. Couldn't be easier! Who came up with this idea? I want to hug them!!

Missed collections - call 020 8356 6688 before noon, and the rubbish will be collected that afternoon.

Hackney Wasteline collects your unwanted domestic goods - a TV, a washing machine, furniture – for free.
Call 020 8356 6688 and book your collection.

Hackney collects commercial waste too - call 020 8533 7583.
You book and pay, they collect.

Flytipping is illegal and carries fines of up to £20,000 and a prison sentence.

tremendous success, and hope that it will be the first of many. Butterfield
Green has finally been reclaimed as a public space to be enjoyed by the whole

Butterfield Green Fair, Sunday 20 May (updated flyer)

We’re hoping for a sunny Sunday afternoon for our first community fair on Butterfield Green.

There will be music, entertainment and games, as well as competitions, art projects and food. Come and join us, and bring your kids, dogs and sense of humour.

Sponsors needed - Belle Epoque, Mother Earth, Moving East and The Shakespeare Pub are all backing the Fair.

Working with young people locally - the CRIB community project

Janette Collins of the CRIB community youth project was welcomed to our December meeting.

Janette explained that her work in and around the Milton Gardens Estate involved around 70 young people.

She was a founding member of the youth club that closed around 1990, and numerous problems beyond her control have severely disrupted efforts to get it re-opened.

She explained that there is a virtually unused Community Hall, and young people still have no local facilities.

The meeting agreed that a representative from Hackney Homes be invited to the next meeting, and to write to all three local councillors to express our support for the youth club and our concern about lack of progress.

St Mungo’s Church Walk give Shakespeare Neighbourhood talk

I was delighted to be able to attend the Shakespeare Neighbourhood Association in December.

St Mungo’s Church Walk is a hostel for 29 homeless women, the majority of whom are Hackney residents with a wide range of support needs and who would otherwise risk sleeping on the street. The hostel is staffed 24 hours a day providing a safe place to live and support to help the women be able to live more independently and to access health care, training and counselling. We aim to be a good neighbour but can’t always know what is happening outside so please let me know if you have any concerns or questions about the project.

We will be holding an open day this summer and hope you will come along to meet staff and residents.
